”Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”
Hebrews 4:13 (NIV)
The ceremony is underway when the nine-year-old king stops it.
Three ceremonial swords are brought forward, representing each kingdom Edward VI is about to rule. The room is packed with dignitaries and the stakes are high. The young king stops the procession and says, "There is a sword that is missing." When the room stops, he points to the Bible and declares, "That book is the Sword of the Spirit, and to be preferred before these three."
A nine-year-old understands something that many of us miss.
Hebrews 4:12 says that God’s Word is sharper than any sword. Verse 13 explains why, "Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” This Sword was written by the same God before whom you will one day stand and give account for how you lived.
And that phrase "laid bare" is more vivid than you might expect. It literally means “to put a knife to the throat.” It is a word that was used of criminals who were being led to trial or execution, and a soldier would hold the point of a dagger under their chin to force them to look the judge right in his eyes.
One day, you will stand before the Author of this book, and the only question that matters is whether you let His Word prepare you for that moment.
The swords you collect in this life cannot help you on that day. The only sword that prepares you for eternity is the one sitting on your nightstand right now.
You still have time to pick up this sword and let it get into your heart before you stand before its Author.
Prayer: Sovereign Lord, You are the creator of heaven and earth. You spoke the world into existence with Your Word. Speak to my circumstances through Your Word with that kind of power and authority. I don't want to reach the end of my life wishing I had opened this Book sooner. Today I'm picking it up. Open my eyes as I read, speak to me, and prepare me for the day I stand before You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
